Lesson 2 – For and Since

Filed under: Beginner, prepositions — GEOS NYC @ 4:05 pm

With the warm, sunny weather we are having in New York City this week, I started wondering just how much rain have we had this June. Too much! Let’s see how we can put that into words, shall we?Learn more about prepositions at GEOS Language Institute NY

You can say, “It’s been raining since last weekend” or “It’s been raining for 4 days.” Well, what is the difference?

We use since  when we talk about a specific point in time. Here are some examples:

  • I’ve been studying English at GEOS since January.
  • I haven’t seen Sarah since Monday.
  • My mom has been living in the same house since 1965.

We use for  when we talk about a time period. Here are some examples:

  • I’ve been studying TOEFL at GEOS for three months
  • I haven’t seen Sarah for 3 days.
  • My mom has been living in the same house for 44 years.

That’s a long time, don’t you think?  Well, that’s all the time we have for today’s one point lesson. Thanks for joining me and please feel free to comment or ask questions.
